            Common Lies of the Enemy
& Truth/Ideas to Combat the Lies

The enemy will often come with thought suggestions.  We have the choice to fight against those thought suggestions or to take them in.  He will often come again and again, so we may have to keep fighting for a time and replacing the lies with truth.  If something jumps out at you, you may consider writing it down or saving it into your phone so that you can remember it when needed.

Even Jesus had to fight the lies with the truth of God's Word.

If you are not saved yet (Click here)

So here are some Common Lies :
(and some ideas for how to combat them.  As you read the bible, God may give you additional ways to combat lies.)

I am inadequate, not good enough, not cool enough, etc.
(God created me with a purpose and He is equipping me to do what He calls me to do. I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me. I can look to God to help me grow. Eph 3:10, Phil 4:13)

I have to be perfect for God to love me. (Jesus died for me while I was a sinner. He will never stop loving me. Nothing can separate me from his love.
Roman 5:8 & 8:38)

I have to be perfect for God to use me
(I am a minister of reconciliation for God because I am His new creation 2 Cor 5:17  God uses imperfect people to accomplish His purposes.  There is not a perfect person in the bible.  Peter, Matthew, Paul, David, Abraham, Moses, etc.  God used them and he can use me. )

That promise is not for me.
(All Godís promises are Yes in Christ
2 Cor 1:20)

I could never forgive him/her/them for what he/she/they did to me
(I am free to forgive. It's a choice I can make.  I am free to pray for that person. I can trust God to help me do the right thing and forgive and pray like He tells me to do. I can forgive and pray for people like Jesus did.  Eph 4:31-32, Luke 23:33-34 )

I am really afraid of _______.
(When I am afraid I will trust in You, I am free to be brave, calm, & peaceful. I am free to know you are with me. God wants to deliver me from all my fears. I will keep seeking and trusting God to help me.Psalm 56:3, Psalm 34:4, Psalm 23:4)

Iím having a hard time believing ______.
(I do believe; help me overcome my unbelief Mark 9:24)

Did you see what ________ did? You should tell others so they will not like that person.
( I am free to speak life. I will not let unwholesome talk come out of my mouth. I am free not to gossip.  I am free to discuss this matter with a counselor or someone who can give me godly advice about how to handle what I've seen and what to do.  Some things need to be reported, other things I just need to pray about.  I believe you are going to help me know which is right in this situation.
Prov 18:21, Eph 4:29, 2 Cor 12:20,
Col 3:8-9 )

Did God really say ________?
(I am Godís sheep and I will hear His voice.  I am free to talk to a godly person to help me grow in learning how to hear from God.  I am free to hide God's Word in my heart to help me store up truth.
John 10:14-16, Psalm 119:11)

I have nothing of real value to offer others ( I am the salt and light of the earth
Matt 5:13-14 God doesn't make junk. I am God's masterpiece. God has good things he planned for me to do.  Eph 2:10)

Iím an accident, a mistake, and therefore worthless. I wish I were someone else.

Significance is found only in a beautiful appearance, superior intelligence or an image of success.
(I am Godís temple, significant because I have God indwelling me 1 Cor 3:16)

I can only be significant through much effort and hard work. I can never be really sure of Godís love
(God invites me to come to Him. I can approach God anytime with freedom and confidence Eph 3:12  My significance comes from being a part of God's family.)

I am all alone
(God will never leave me or forsake me. He will be with me forever. Heb 13:5)

My relationship with God depends on me trying harder to please Him
(I have been established, anointed, and sealed by God.  I am God's child.  I can come freely to talk to Him about the good and the bad things happening in my life and know that He wants to help me. He is helping to shape and mold my life. I can trust Him.)

I will never be able to overcome that sin
(I am a victorious overcomer through the power of the Holy Spirit)

Sin isnít really that big of a deal

Since I still struggle with sin, God will quit working in my life and give up on me. (God will never leave me or forsake me)

The enemy still has authority and we should be afraid of him.
(Jesus was given ALL authority. That means the devil has NO authority.  We have been given authority to trample on snake and scorpions and to overcome ALL the power of the enemy.)

You canít trust God in all things.  Some things you simply have to handle yourself (God is all-knowing, He knows the best way to handle any situation. I am free to come to Him to help me.  He tells me I can come boldly before His throne to receive mercy and grace for my time of need)
