Do you want to be happy?

Ecclesiastes 2:26To the person who pleases him, God gives wisdom, knowledge and happiness, but to the sinner he gives the task of gathering and storing up wealth to hand it over to the one who pleases God."

From this verse, we see that happiness
is one of the results of pleasing God.
So how do we please God?  Following are several ways.  I’m sure there are more, but these are the ones that I found during my search.

How to Please God

1) Have Faith

And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him.  (Hebrews 11:6)

2) Sing praise to God and glorify him with thanksgiving

Praise the LORD. How good it is to sing praises to our God, how pleasant and fitting to praise him!  (Psalm 147:1)

I will praise God’s name in song and glorify him with thanksgiving. This will please the LORD more than an ox, more than a bull with its horns and hooves. (Psalm 69:30-31)

3) Don’t be a people pleaser.  Focus on pleasing God.

Am I now trying to win the approval of human beings, or of God? Or am I trying to please people? If I were still trying to please people, I would not be a servant of Christ.  (Galatians 1:9-10)

On the contrary, we speak as those approved by God to be entrusted with the gospel. We are not trying to please people but God, who tests our hearts.  (1 Thessalonians 2:4)

No one serving as a soldier gets entangled in civilian affairs, but rather tries to please his commanding officer. (2 Timothy 2:4)

4) Be a praying person.

I urge, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for all people-  for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness. This is good, and pleases God our Savior,  who wants all people to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth. (1 Timothy 2:1-4)

5) Live by the Spirit

Those who are in the realm of the flesh cannot please God. (Romans 8:8)

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.
(Galatians 5:22-23)

6) Do what leads to peace and mutual edification

For the kingdom of God is not a matter of eating and drinking, but of righteousness, peace and joy in the Holy Spirit,  because anyone who serves Christ in this way is pleasing to God and receives human approval. Let us therefore make every effort to do what leads to peace and to mutual edification.  (Romans 14:17-19)

7) Ask the Holy Spirit to fill you with the knowledge of God’s will through all wisdom and understanding

For this reason, since the day we heard about you, we have not stopped praying for you. We continually ask God to fill you with the knowledge of his will through all the wisdom and understanding that the Spirit gives, so that you may live a life worthy of the Lord and please him in every way: bearing fruit in every good work, growing in the knowledge of God,  (Colossians 1:9-10)

8) Give sacrificially

I have received full payment and have more than enough. I am amply supplied, now that I have received from Epaphroditus the gifts you sent. They are a fragrant offering, an acceptable sacrifice, pleasing to God.
(Philippians 4:18)

9) Do good and share with others

And do not forget to do good and to share with others, for with such sacrifices God is pleased. (Hebrews 13:16)

10)  Have nothing to do with fruitless deeds of darkness

For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light  (for the fruit of the light consists in all goodness, righteousness and truth)  and find out what pleases the Lord.  Have nothing to do with the fruitless deeds of darkness, but rather expose them.  It is shameful even to mention what the disobedient do in secret.  But everything exposed by the light becomes visible-and everything that is illuminated becomes a light. (Ephesians 5:8-13)

11) Spread the knowledge of Christ

But thanks be to God, who always leads us as captives in Christ’s triumphal procession and uses us to spread the aroma of the knowledge of him everywhere. For we are to God the pleasing aroma of Christ among those who are being saved and those who are perishing. (2 Corinthians 2:14-15)

12) Be sanctified: avoid sexual immorality, control your own body in a way that is holy and honorable, love each other, lead a quiet life, mind your own business, work with your hands

As for other matters, brothers and sisters, we instructed you how to live in order to please God, as in fact you are living. Now we ask you and urge you in the Lord Jesus to do this more and more. For you know what instructions we gave you by the authority of the Lord Jesus. It is God’s will that you should be sanctified: that you should avoid sexual immorality;  that each of you should learn to control your own body in a way that is holy and honorable,  not in passionate lust like the pagans, who do not know God;  and that in this matter no one should wrong or take advantage of a brother or sister. The Lord will punish all those who commit such sins, as we told you and warned you before.  For God did not call us to be impure, but to live a holy life.  Therefore, anyone who rejects this instruction does not reject a human being but God, the very God who gives you his Holy Spirit.  Now about your love for one another we do not need to write to you, for you yourselves have been taught by God to love each other.  And in fact, you do love all of God’s family throughout Macedonia. Yet we urge you, brothers and sisters, to do so more and more,  and to make it your ambition to lead a quiet life: You should mind your own business and work with your hands, just as we told you,  so that your daily life may win the respect of outsiders and so that you will not be dependent on anybody.
(1 Thessalonians 4:1-11)

13) Living in Unity

“How good and pleasant it is when God’s people live together in unity!” (Psalm 133:1)

14) Take care of widows (especially in your family)

But if a widow has children or grandchildren, these should learn first of all to put their religion into practice by caring for their own family and so repaying their parents and grandparents, for this is pleasing to God. (1 Timothy 5:4)

Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world.
(James 1:27)

15) If you are a child, obey your parents.
Children, obey your parents in everything, for this pleases the Lord.  (Colossians 3:20)

16) Fulfill your vows
When you make a vow to God, do not delay to fulfill it. He has no pleasure in fools; fulfill your vow. (Ecclesiastes 5:4)

17) Be a faithful servant
“His master replied, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Come and share your master’s happiness!’  (Matthew 25:21)
